        Common Challenges While

        Working in an Occupied

        Healthcare Facility

                 ompleting work at a new
                 construction healthcare
                 facility or addition is very
       Cdifferent than quoting,
        being awarded, and performing
        work in an occupied healthcare
        facility. Working in an occupied
        healthcare facility can present many
        challenges that contractors may not
always be faced with while working
on a renovation project that is non-
        healthcare related. These challenges
can range from how to bid an
        occupied healthcare project to ICRA
        (Infection Control Risk Assessment)
requirements. I am not suggesting that
        non-healthcare renovations do not
have these challenges just that they are
more prominent in a healthcare facility
renovation. The best way to explain
some of these challenges is to describe
the life cycle of a recent project we
completed at a hospital in Michigan.
It was a hot and early fall afternoon,
and our company was asked to quote
one dialysis room - 40 sy of 6” flash
cove sheet vinyl with no demo. The
demo was to be completed by the GC
        and the construction schedule showed
we would have the room alone for 2
days during the day shift with no other
trade overlap. This project was slated
to be completed at the end of October/
early November. There was no site walk
to verify field conditions prior to the Illustrations courtesy Flooring Services,, Inc.
bid date as the hospital was occupied
        and the COVID pandemic regulations
in Michigan would not allow. We all
have our own methods of calculating
        the appropriate labor, pricing of
